How to Know when to change out your Grinding Coolant

First, check your coolant strength with a refractomer and adjust accordingly to bring the strength back to the recommended specs. Generally, you'll need to be adding water to the mix as it evaporates off faster- not your coolant concentrate.

Here are some things to look for:

1) A rancid smell indicates contaminated or spent coolant. Empty & Clean the tank and re-fill with a high quality lubricant. Both Safety Cool and Syntilo coolants Wood Tech supllys offer superior bio-resistant additives to better reduce the coolant from turning rancid.

2) Old contaminated coolant can be a health risk to you and your operators, due to the airborne bateria carried by the mist from your grinder. Symptoms of this include: sore throat , repiratory problems, itchy shin or dermitits. These symptoms are also associated with coolant that is too "rich". Again, the proper use of a refractometer will help you in maintaining proper coolant-to-water ratios.
NOTE: If you have issues with dermititis or other skin rwactions, Wood Tech recommends using Syntilo 9918, as it has a neutral ph and minimal mist properties.

3) In addition to pre-mature machine wear, old coolant can reduce gringing wheel life expectancy considerably. Old coolant also holds grinding particles in suspension longer, resulting in poorer finish quality and accurancy.

4) Using a high quality water-based grinding coolant will help alleviate these problems.
